Using strong natural material lengths, Avianto forms a large site-specific piece that both interacts with and juxtaposes with the existing architectural structure. A towering, basketlike interlacing of rough, dry branches undulated overhead as visitors enter the museum, welcoming them to an exhibition about Indonesian art that uses a medium to express the essence of culture.

Avianto’s ‘Pohon Besar’ (big tree) was installed in three weeks and consists of 1,500 interlaced bamboo sticks, specifically cut to 6 meters long. In using bamboo, the artist refers to its traditional use as a building material, which is gradually being replaced by rapid social and industrial development.
